Stain Removal Guide for Handmade Rugs

Quick, correct response to stains can prevent permanent damage. Here's how to address common accidents on handmade rugs.

General Principles

Act immediately. Blot, never rub. Work from the outside of the stain inward. Test cleaning solutions on an inconspicuous area.

Wine and Coffee

Blot excess liquid. Apply cool water, blot again. If stain persists, use a solution of one tablespoon white vinegar per cup of water.

Pet Accidents

Blot thoroughly. Apply enzymatic cleaner designed for pet stains. Rinse with cool water and blot dry.

Oil and Grease

Absorb excess with paper towels. Apply cornstarch to absorb remaining oil. Vacuum after several hours.

When to Call Professionals

Silk rugs, large stains, unknown substances, or stains that resist home treatment require professional attention.
