How to Properly Store Handmade Rugs

Proper storage protects your investment during moves, renovations, or seasonal changes. These guidelines prevent damage during storage periods.

Preparation

Clean the rug professionally before storage. Ensure complete dryness to prevent mold and mildew development.

Rolling Technique

Roll rugs pile-side in, around an acid-free tube if possible. Never fold—creases can become permanent in stored rugs.

Wrapping

Use breathable fabric or acid-free paper. Avoid plastic, which traps moisture and can cause mildew.

Moth Prevention

Cedar or lavender sachets deter moths. Check stored rugs periodically for signs of pest activity.

Storage Environment

Choose climate-controlled storage away from direct sunlight. Avoid basements and attics where temperature and humidity fluctuate.
